What Kind of Hardware Will Windows 11 Require?

What Kind of Hardware Will Windows 11 Require?

Despite Microsoft’s comments several years back, Windows 10 is indeed not the final iteration of Windows. Microsoft has officially let the cat out of the bag with Windows 11, the latest in its line of PC operating systems. We urge your business to consider the minimum requirements for upgrading to Windows 11 now while Windows 10 is still supported. Let’s take a look at the system specifications and requirements for Windows 11.

First, we want to mention that Windows 11 does not officially release until fall of this year, so even if you can’t get your hardware upgraded before then, Windows 10 will remain supported until 2025. The hardware requirements themselves should give you a good idea for what you can expect when the operating system does eventually drop.

Windows 11 Hardware Requirements

To provide a little bit of context, the current minimum system requirements for Windows 10 include a 1GHz processor, either 1 or 2 GB of RAM (depending on if you have the 32 or 64-bit operating system), and a display with at least an 800x600 resolution. These are the absolute bare minimum requirements, so suffice to say that you won’t get much out of a machine with these specs.

Windows 11 is a bit more restrictive with its requirements. Windows 11 requires a 1GHz multi-core processor, but it doesn’t have to be anything too special. For memory, Windows 11 requires at least 4 GB of RAM, as well as 64 GB of onboard storage. The display requirements are higher as well, needing at least 720p to run.

For more on the specific requirements of Windows 11, check out this document from Microsoft.

Now, modern PCs probably won’t have any issues running Windows 11, but we still don’t recommend installing it on a PC that you use every day for work—at least, not yet.

Get Ready for Windows 11 Today

Windows 10 isn’t going anywhere soon, but it is never too early to start thinking about your upgrade strategy. The last thing you need is for 2025 to roll around and you have not thought about upgrading from Windows 10 at all. If you are using unsupported software when this time comes, well, you’re putting yourself at risk, just like the countless users of Windows XP did all those years ago.
